Chapter 15.

Demons

“Behind you!” I shouted. Cindy ducked just in time as the spectre loomed over her and let out a visible wail of dark energy, withering away even the dust in the air. She spun on her heels and released a blast of golden energy. Purification magic. One of Cindy’s affinities as a sorceress. While she was an adept wizard, she was also a natural sorcerer, with a spark attuned to light magic. Unfortunately, her instinctive response didn’t have much of an effect. The spectre flinched at the golden light and responded with a deafening screech.

Stunned, Cindy stared at the creature. I dive-tackled her out of the way as it swooped down on her. If it made contact with her flesh, then she may as well be the now withered dust.

“I thought it was a dark spirit,” she exclaimed.

“Now that’s just presumptuous!”

I helped her to her feet as the spectre considered us. It resembled an old man, translucent and floating off the ground. His mouth was elongated and twisted, and his eyes were angry.

“Its ethereal. We need to breach the In Between to put it down.”

“And that’s why Brett is taking so long?”

“8mm rounds are not common.”

The spectre, impatient at our nattering, let out a challenging cry and soared across the room. I took a step back. Treth stopped me.

“Use the mirror across the room. It might have a silver backing.”

Check that! Treth was wizening up about something other than the undead.

“Cindy, keep it busy!”

“How?”

Too late. I ducked at the last minute, sliding across the tiling and underneath the spirit. Cindy let out a blast of purification magic. More to stun it, as the magic couldn’t pass through the In Between.

I trusted that Cindy would keep the spirit at bay and retrieved the large oval mirror. It had fancy ornate framing and a thick layer of dust on its front.

I lifted it off its wall-hanging and held it like a wide bat. It wouldn’t be the first time I had used something really unsuitable for spirit hunting. In hindsight, we should have stocked up on ammo for Voidshot before we arrived. But the damn client told us it was a wraith. So, we thought Cindy’s purification would suffice against the ostensibly and undeniably dark spirit. It wasn’t a wraith, but rather, a more morally ambivalent spectre. Before we could fall back and go and retrieve the proper equipment, the spectre invaded a neighbour’s house through the wall. Brett went to retrieve ammo while we kept it busy, allowing the homeowner to escape.

“I really hope this has silver,” I grunted through gritted teeth. I held it up like a bat, ready to swing, and charged.

Cindy saw me approach, let out another blast of golden energy, and dove away from the spirit. It turned just as I belted it across its ethereal body with the mirror. I felt resistance and a surge of excitement. The mirror had silver! It could make contact. I heard a crash and saw the sprinkling of reflective glass cascade onto the ground.
